The United Nations Economic and Social Council re-elected Iran to the U.N. Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the U.N. body dedicated to promoting stable criminal justice systems, on April 16, 2018. Iran was re-elected as part of a fixed slate submitted by the Asia-Pacific regional group, in which the number of states running was equal to the number of seats that the regional group was allotted. Iran, which
arrested nearly 5,000 people protesting against the Iranian regime in February 2018, will continue to serve on the Commission until December 31, 2021. Iran was
previously elected to the Commission in April 2015 and joined the Commission in January 2016.
