The greenhouse set on fire in an Israeli community

A Palestinian man managed to breach the Gaza border fence on Friday and infiltrate several hundred meters into Israel, setting on fire a greenhouse in one of the communities near the border before being caught, the army said.

The man was not armed and was taken for interrogation by the Shin Bet Security service.

The IDF initially believed that the greenhouse had been set on fire by a flare fired by soldiers looking for the man, however, he told his interrogators that he had set the fire.

The army was investigating how the man managed to evade IDF patrols and get so close to an Israeli community. Details of the incident were barred from publication by the IDF censor until he was caught.

The incident came during protests along the border Friday.

Reports said Palestinians also threw several explosive devices at IDF soldiers and two men tried to breach the border before retreating. The army responded with tear gas and riot dispersal means. At least one Palestinian was killed and 37 Palestinians wounded, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said.

The scene following the terror attack in Melbourne

Australian police on Friday said they were treating a deadly knife attack in Melbourne as an act of terror, adding that the suspect was originally from Somalia and was known to intelligence authorities.

"We are now treating this as a terrorism event," said Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton, adding that the suspect is "someone that is known to us" and had been travelling in a 4×4 packed with gas bottles.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility. "The perpetrator of the operation... in Melbourne... was an Islamic State fighter and carried out the operation... to target nationals of the coalition" fighting IS, propaganda channel Amaq quoted a jihadist source as saying.

The knife-wielding attacker killed one person and injured two others in a rush hour stabbing rampage in downtown Melbourne Friday, before being shot and captured by police.

Witnesses said the man began attacking pedestrians near a pickup truck apparently belonging to the attacker which had exploded into flames.

Australian police said one person died at the scene and another two others were being treated for their injuries.

The suspect was was hospitalized in critical condition.

Media showed video footage of police then trying to restrain a large man in a dark tunic who was lunging, slashing and stabbing wildly at two officers as a pick-up truck burned nearby.

The officers were seen trying for at least a minute to detain the man peaceably as his attacks on them continued, before one office shot him with a weapon.

Police warned people to avoid the area and dispatched the bomb squad to secure the area and examine the burning car.

Officers said they "are not looking for anyone further at this early stage."

"The exact circumstances are yet to be determined. The area has been cordoned off," police said.

Israeli security forces inspect the scene of an earlier attempted stabbing of Israeli civilians near Hebron on November 5, 2018

On Monday, a Palestinian man was shot after attempting to commit a stabbing attack in the West Bank

A Palestinian woman was shot after she attempted to stab Israeli border police officers with scissors at a gas station on Tuesday near the West Bank settlement Kfar Adumim.

Local media reported that the woman drew a sharp object and attempted to stab the officers, who then shot and subdued the assailant.

The assailant was neutralized at the scene and no injuries to officers were reported, the Israel Police spokesperson said.

A police statement identified her as a 37-year-old Palestinian from Yata, a town south of Hebron in the southern West Bank.

Police had been alerted to the scene after a civilian reported she was acting in a suspicious way at a falafel shop in the gas station complex and located her, the statement said.

After calling on her to stop, she pulled out scissors from her bag and ran at the officers while yelling in Arabic, it said.

She was shot in the leg and moderately wounded, police said, noting she had also been in possession of a knife. She was evacuated to a nearby hospital in moderate condition, local media reported.

Earlier Tuesday morning, Shin Bet chief Nadav Argaman said at a Knesset security briefing that the intelligence organization has thwarted 480 attacks this year in a struggle to maintain "relative calm" in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

A similar incident occurred earlier this week when a Palestinian man was shot after attempting to commit a stabbing attack in the West Bank on Monday.

In a statement following the incident, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said one of its troops "thwarted this attack after he identified a terrorist attempting to stab civilians and an IDF officer. In response, the soldier fired towards the terrorist and neutralized him.

"There were no injuries reported aside from the assailant, who was seen in a video circulating on social media lying on the ground, apparently shot in the leg, with IDF troops surrounding him.

The knife used by a Palestinian man in an attempted stabbing attack near the West Bank city of Hebron, November 5, 20018

A Palestinian attempted to stab an Israeli soldier near the West Bank city of Hebron on Sunday and was shot by soldiers, the military said.

The IDF said the attempted stabbing took place at Elias Junction at the entrance to the Kiryat Arba settlement, and said it was investigating the incident.

Reports said the assailant was lightly injured, and has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

No Israeli troops or civilians were injured in the attempted attack.

Kiryat Arba is adjacent to the divided city of Hebron, where Palestinians live in close proximity to settlers who are guarded by Israeli troops. The flashpoint city, which is home to the Tomb of the Patriarchs, has been the scene of numerous stabbings and attempted stabbings in recent years.

Last month, a Palestinian was shot dead while attempting to stab an Israeli soldier at the holy site. The soldier, who was lightly injured in the attack, struggled with the assailant briefly before fatally shooting him, the army said.
