Mission of the General Assembly: "13. The General Assembly shall initiate studies and make recommendations for the purpose of:
a. promoting international co-operation in the political field and encouraging the progressive development of international law and its codification; b. promoting international co-operation in the economic, social, cultural, educational, and health fields, and assisting in the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion." ("UN Charter")
Term of office: 2017-2018 Gabon's Record on "the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion": "Other serious human rights problems included: use of excessive force by police; police harassment and extortion of noncitizen Africans and refugees; an inefficient judiciary subject to government influence; restrictions on access to the internet and on freedom of assembly; government corruption; violence and societal discrimination against women, indigenous populations, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex persons, and persons with HIV/AIDS; ritual killings; and trafficking in persons, including forced child labor... Impunity remained a problem... There were reports the government and its forces committed unlawful killings... There were numerous reports of disappearances."
