Japan, Mexico agree to cooperate to achieve U.N. reform September 26, 2005 Yahoo http://asia.news.yahoo.com/050926/kyodo/d8cruhv00.html (Kyodo) _ Japan and Mexico agreed Monday to cooperate toward achieving a wide range of goals on reforming the United Nations, Foreign Ministry officials said. The agreement was made during a meeting in Tokyo between Japanese and Mexican foreign ministers Nobutaka Machimura and Luis Ernesto Derbez. The officials quoted Machimura as saying Japan plans to create a draft on U.N. Security Council reform that will gather a wider range of support. In response, Derbez vowed Mexico will cooperate with Japan, the officials said. On Sept. 16, the U.N. summit gathering world leaders ended after adopting the document called the 2005 World Summit Outcome, which defers the matter of Security Council reform to a later date. Brazil, Germany, India and Japan had together been pressing for restructuring the powerful council by adding new permanent and nonpermanent seats. The four countries again plan to push forward on the reform matter. Machimura and Derbez also agreed to cooperate on issues of common interest such as expanding trade following a bilateral free trade agreement taking effect in April, the officials said. Derbez is visiting Japan from Friday to Tuesday.
