U.N. Backtracks on 2 Salaries Story Carl Limbacher and staff December 23, 2005 Newsmax Original Source: http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/12/23/105147.shtml A December 21, 2005 Inside Cover report entitled U.N. Official Makes Two Salaries, drew a sharp rebuke from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan who claimed it wasn't so. The report provided to us by correspondent Stew Stogel stated that Annan's current chief of staff, Mark Malloch Brown (UK), who assumed the position in January, 2005, was receiving two salaries. The report was confirmed by the U.N. press spokesman Stephane Dujarric to Stogel. After the NewsMax report, the U.N. quickly backtracked on its confirmation. Before moving to Annan's office, Malloch Brown was the executive director of the U.N. Development Program (UNDP). NewsMax had confirmed that between January-April of 2005, Malloch Brown was paid for both positions until a replacement at UNDP was named. The report was based on a confirmation from the U.N. press office. On Wednesday afternoon, NewsMax was informed that the confirmation was not accurate and that Malloch Brown did not receive two salaries. The U.N. said Brown did hold two U.N. positions for a period of 8 months, not four, as was first claimed. When pressed for an official release on Mr Malloch Brown's total compensation from the United Nations for fiscal 2005, it was revealed that he did make a salary close to the figures cited by NewsMax, but paid out as one, not two increments. Based on official figures from the United Nations, Mr Malloch Brown made more in 2005 than the Vice-President of the United States, the Chief Justice of the United States, The Speaker of the House, The Secretary of State, The Secretary of Defense, and his White House counterpart, Andy Card. Some figures as provided by the United Nations and the White House Office of Personnel Management: Mark Malloch Brown - Chief of Staff - Executive Office of the Secretary-General $254,630 (estimated scheduled compensation-total compensation for the chief of staff was not released). Dick Cheney - Vice President of the United States - $208,100 John Roberts - Chief Justice of the United States - $208,100 Dennis Hastert - US Speaker of the House - $201,044 Condoleezza Rice - Secretary of State - $180,100 Donald Rumsfeld - Secretary of Defense - $180,100 Andrew Card - White House Chief of Staff - $180,100 And, Malloch Brown's 2005 salary was approved by the U.S. State Dept., who voted in favor of it in the U.N. General Assembly. Last year, the U.N. ran a budget deficit in excess of $300 mil(US) and Annan has made budgetary belt tightening a priority in 2006, his final year in office. The U.N.'s budget for 2006 is now in negotiations in a General Assembly committee.
