ICC official to head Hariri probe By Mark Turner January 12, 2006 The Financial Times Original Source: http://news.ft.com/cms/s/48c44958-8310-11da-ac1f-0000779e2340.html http://news.ft.com/c.gif \* MERGEFORMATINET Kofi Annan, the UN secretary-general, yesterday formally announced the appointment of Serge Brammertz, the deputy prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, as the new head of the UN investigation into the murder of Rafiq Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister. Mr Bramertz, a former Belgian federal prosecutor, replaces Detlev Mehlis, the German prosecutor, and will serve for the investigation's remaining six months. Mr Annan will send a mission shortly to Lebanon to discuss international assistance for trying alleged perpetrators in a tribunal of an international character. The UN also will consult with Mr Brammertz and the Lebanese authorities regarding the most effective manner of expanding the work of the Commission . . to investigate other terrorist attacks since 1 October.
