President Hugo Chavez in Cuba to Receive UN Award February 3, 2006 Periodico (Cuba) Original Source: http://www.periodico26.cu/english/news_cuba/chavez020306.htm Havana, Feb 3 (AIN) Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias arrived in Havana early Friday morning and was welcomed by President Fidel Castro at the Jose Marti International airport. The two leaders embraced each other in a gesture that symbolizes their close friendship and their joint efforts to boost Latin American integration. Also present at the airport were Council of State member Carlos Valenciaga and Venezuelan ambassador to Cuba Adan Chavez. Hugo Chavez is scheduled to receive the UNESCO Jose MartI International Award on Friday evening during a ceremony at Havana's Revolution square. The ceremony will be attended by thousands of Venezuelan medical students, other foreign youths studying to become doctors in Cuba as well as more than 200,000 Havana residents. Created in 1994 by the UNESCO Executive Council, the prize is designed to promote meritorious efforts in the spirit and ideology of Jose Marti and his vocation of struggle for sovereignty, liberation, and the unity of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, while preserving their identities, cultural traditions and historic values. Prior to the ceremony, the Venezuelan President will participate in the inauguration of the 15th International Book Fair Cuba 2006, which this year, is dedicated to Venezuela. Chavez' current visit to the island is also expected to further joint cooperation programs between Venezuela and Cuba.
