Sudan Asks Arab Leaders to Back AU Force in Darfur By Reuters March 28, 2006 The New York Times Original Source: http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/international/international-arabs-summit-sudan.html KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan's president, wary of U.N. military intervention in Darfur, asked Arab leaders on Tuesday to provide more cash for African forces struggling to contain violence in the troubled western region. Sudan is under international pressure to allow U.N. troops to take over from a cash-strapped African Union mission in Darfur. President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has so far rejected any such transition to the United Nations. He has said the government would only consider it if a peace deal is mostly non-Arabs, driven from their homes during more than three years of rape, killing and pillage in Darfur. Opposition politicians say the government is scared U.N. forces in Darfur may be used to arrest anyone indicted by thnth. ``They are unlikely to get a significant amount of money,'' said one Arab diplomat who declined to be named.
