UNRWA Official Concerned Over Situation in Gaza March 23, 2006 Arutz Sheva/Israel National News Original Source: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=100631 (IsraelNN.com) Senior UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Work Agency) official Karen Abu-Zayid expressed concerns over the “humanitarian crisis” that exists in Palestinian Authority (PA) autonomous areas. She is calling on European nations and the European Union to give the incoming Hamas-led PA government a chance to prove itself. The senior UN official expressed hope that the situation in autonomous areas will improve following the Israeli elections, adding the situation may worsen if salaries are not paid in the PA. The senior official did not comment on Israeli statements, documenting the so-called humanitarian crisis in the PA is the direct result of the political decision made by PA leaders not to utilize the Kerem Shalom Crossing to permit the importation of flour and other basic food items, opting to permit the situation to deteriorate in the hope of creating an international issue surrounding the closure of Karni Crossing. Israel has shut the commercial crossing in response to continuous intelligence community warnings of a planned attack at that location.
