From Bail to Jail for U.N. Big By Kati Cornell February 2, 2007 The New York Post Original Source: http://www.nypost.com/seven/02022007/news/regionalnews/from_bail_to_jail_for_u_n__big_regionalnews_kati_cornell.htm An allegedly crooked U.N. official who had been free on bail while awaiting trial on bribe charges was sent to the slammer yesterday, after a federal judge found he's more likely to flee now that he's out of a job. Sanjaya Bahel had been free on $900,000 bail, but Manhattan federal Judge Denise Cote found that his recent firing by the United Nations, his tenuous immigration status and family ties in India give him too much reason to run. Bahel was arrested in November for allegedly using his clout as a section chief within the Procurement Division of the United Nations to steer $54 million in contracts to a rich businessman pal in exchange for a deal on a swank Midtown condo. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Buchdahl also argued that Bahel, 55, is facing a tougher court fight after the wealthy pal, Nichan Kohli, 'fessed up to the bribe scheme and agreed to cooperate with the feds. Bahel had posted the condo as security on his $900,000 bail.
