Ex - U.N. Official Freed in Bribery Case February 26, 2007 New York Times Original Source: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-UN-Procurement.html?_r=1&oref=slogin A former United Nations procurement official accused of taking bribes was released from jail Monday after additional cash and property were raised to support his $900,000 bail. U.S. District Judge Denise Cote ordered Sanjaya Bahel jailed Feb. 1 after deciding that amount was insufficient to ensure he would show up for trial. Bahel's lawyer, Richard B. Herman, said the value of cash and property now exceeds the amount of the bail. A prosecution spokeswoman declined to comment. Bahel, an Indian diplomat and the former head of the U.N. commodity procurement section, has pleaded not guilty to steering contracts worth more than $50 million to Nishan Kohli, who controlled companies that sold computer equipment. Prosecutors allege Kohli paid Bahel in cash and real estate. Bahel, 55, was fired from the U.N. in December. His trial could happen next month. Kohli, of Miami, has pleaded guilty and is expected to get less than the maximum 10-year prison sentence in exchange for cooperating against Bahel.
