July 20, 2004 Simon Wiesenthal Center Original Source: http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/s/content.asp?c=fwLYKnN8LzH&b=253162&ct=285153 As you have probably heard by now, the International Court of Justice at The Hague has ruled, 14-1, against Israel's security fence, a fence erected in a desperate effort to curb the carnage from suicide bombings against Israeli citizens. That this decision exposes the anti-Israel mindset rampant in the international community, mocks the thousands of innocent people killed and maimed by Palestinian suicide bombers and could endanger more innocent lives in the future is confirmed by the sole dissenting vote by American Judge Thomas Buergenthal. He charged that the case should have been refused because the issue of repeated deadly terror attacks against Israel was never really seriously examined by the court. Now the United Nations General Assembly, a body routinely hijacked to single out Israel for vilification, is at it again. After sending the security fence issue initially to the ICJ, this week it voted 150-6 to demand that Israel immediately remove a fence that has reduced suicide bombings by 90%! No such demand was ever made of Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, or India - each of which has built barriers against neighbors in contested areas! Where are the 150 General Assembly members from Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa, when it comes to declaring suicide bombing a crime against humanity? Why hasn't the General Assembly sent that question to The Hague for a legal ruling? Could it be because such a resolution would expose to the entire world that the main perpetrators of these heinous acts are Islamist extremists? A declaration against suicide bombing is an absolutely essential first step in ensuring that civilized nations everywhere have the tools they need to combat this scourge of mass murder of innocent people across the globe. You can help us take the fight for such a declaration directly to the United Nations by sending this petition to Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General and Jean Ping, President of the 59th U.N. General Assembly, demanding that they live up to their responsibilities by condemning suicide bombing as a crime against humanity and immediately requesting a legal opinion from the International Court of Justice at The Hague. Just last month Mr. Annan declared, Jews everywhere must feel that the United Nations is their home, too. This is his chance to distance himself from the deadly hypocrisy that Israel and the Jewish people have always faced at the U.N. We at the Center, with the help of hundreds of thousands of dedicated activists like you, have been front and center on this issue from day one. As an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) at the U.N., we combat antisemitism, terrorism and hate at the highest levels of world government. We've pressed leaders across the globe to stand firm against suicide bombing. We've already taken several targeted and specific actions. We've met directly with leaders and diplomats in Spain, Turkey, Canada, Sweden, Latin America, and at the European Union urging their support for this initiative. And immediately following our private meeting with Pope John Paul II, he spoke before a Catholic-Islamic gathering and made a clear unequivocal statement: The holy name of G-d must never be used to incite violence or terrorism, to promote hatred or exclusion. No longer must the Arab and Moslem bloc be allowed to manipulate the proceedings of this world body to cripple the struggle against international terrorism. You can make a difference in this fight. You can play a direct and important role in helping us in the struggle to create a legal tool to empower the victims of suicide bombing and go after those who incite and sponsor this deadly and growing culture of death.
