UN HRC chief: Israel treated unfairly March 10, 2005 The Jerusalem Post http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1110424784904 http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1110424784904 I hope Israel would receive a more balanced treatment in the framework of the changes slated to take place in United Nations institutions, especially in those dealing with human rights, High Commissioner of the UN's Human Rights Commission Louise Arbour said Thursday. Her remarks were made during a meeting in Geneva with Minister of Diaspora Affairs Natan Sharansky. The commission publishes an annual report on human rights across the globe, while Israel is the only country that is given a chapter of its own. In the meeting, Sharansky raised the issue of the double standard Israel is subjected to. How is it, he asked, that a democratic nation, which has many mechanisms to monitor human rights violations, is the only country to receive a 'special' status in the report, while some UN members are totalitarian states in which citizens have no rights? In addition, Arbour told Sharansky that she intends to speak adamantly against anti-Semitism, an issue she said bears the uttermost importance.
