US Ambassador urges UN to be more balanced By Melissa Radler August 7, 2004 The Jerusalem Post – HYPERLINK http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1091859382527&p=1078397702269 http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1091859382527&p=1078397702269 Amb. John Danforth urged member states to refrain from adopting one-sided resolutions against Israel. In an appeal to the nations of the world ahead of the opening of the 59th United Nations General Assembly, US Ambassador John Danforth urged member states to refrain from adopting one-sided resolutions against Israel at the organization's annual session. It does not help. It is the opposite of balance. It is one-sided, and it is contrary to the best interests of attempting to work something out in the Middle East, Danforth told reporters Thursday evening, referring specifically to a recent assembly resolution that endorsed an advisory International Court of Justice opinion deeming Israel's security fence illegal. The resolution was opposed by just 6 of the UN's 191 nations. It is the kind of resolution that tends to create in the minds of the Israelis the sense that they are totally isolated from the rest of the world, that everyone is against them except for five of us, Danforth said. As for the dozens of non-binding, anti-Israel resolutions adopted by the General Assembly annually, these multiple resolutions are redundant, and at best tedious and boring and not a fruitful use of time, Danforth said. And something should be done to fix the situation I would hope that the Europeans in particular would join us to say enough is enough for these crazy resolutions.
