France: UN has evidence of Iranian arms shipments to Damascus Jan 16, 2012 Monster and Critics http://www.monstersandcritics.com/news/middleeast/news/article_1685830.php/France-UN-has-evidence-of-Iranian-arms-shipments-to-Damascus Paris - A senior French official said Monday the United Nations has uncovered evidence that Iran is arming the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Foreign ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said in an online press briefing that United Nations experts had discovered 'several cases of violations of the embargo on arms destined for or coming from Iran...' The experts had informed the UN Security Council of the violations of Security Council resolutions 1747 et 1929, he added. Nadal was responding to a question about a leaked UN report that accuses Iran of arming President Bashar al-Assad's regime against the demonstrators agitating for an end to his rule. 'These arms shipments are illegal and deeply shocking because they are benefiting a regime that has chosen repression that the UN Human Rights Council has repeatedly called 'crimes against humanity,' Nadal said. 'We condemn these violations and call on Iran and Syria to conform fully to the Security Council resolutions,' he said. CNN and other US media last week quoted the leaked UN report as saying Syria was the destination 'of six out of the nine incidents of conventional arms transfers' by Iran that were discovered by UN experts. In one instance, Turkish authorities said they had found nineteen crates of weapons and munitions on a cargo plane that stopped off in Turkey on its way from Iran to Syria in March last year. The assault rifles, machine guns, ammunition and mortars were hidden in boxes marked 'auto spare parts.' Last week Turkish customs officials impounded five Iranian trucks at the Kilis border crossing between Iran and Turkey, on suspicion of ferrying military materials to Syria. Unlike the United States, European Union, Arab League and Turkey Iran has not announced sanctions against Syria. But Iran is banned under UN resolution 1747 of March 2007 from exporting weapons. Resolution 1929 from June 2010 bans countries from selling it heavy weapons.
