Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Agency he directs, http://www.eyeontheun.org/assets/attachments/documents/the-nobel-peace-prize-2005.doc \t _new have won the Nobel Peace Prize.

ElBaradei's most http://www.eyeontheun.org/editor.asp?p=90 \t _new recent claim to fame was helping to prevent the issue of Iran's ambitions to build nuclear weapons from coming before the UN Security Council. The Security Council, you may recall, was given the job, back http://www.un.org/aboutun/charter/ \t _new when the UN was created, of dealing with major threats to peace and security.

But less than two weeks ago, on September 24, 2005, after the IAEA's Governing Board refused to send the Iranian threat to the Security Council, El Baradei http://www.eyeontheun.org/assets/attachments/documents/2005-09-24-iaea-transcript.doc \t _new said:
I am encouraged that the issue has not been referred to the Security Council, precisely to give time for diplomacy and negotiation.... ...time is still available for diplomacy to resolve outstanding issues, for Iran to build confidence, and that the question of reporting to the Security Council could only be discussed at a later date. 
The IAEA http://www.eyeontheun.org/assets/attachments/documents/Resolution_on_implementaiton_IRan_9-24-05.pdf \t _new has found Iran to be in non-compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In such circumstances its http://www.eyeontheun.org/assets/attachments/misc/iaea-statute.html \l A1.12 \t _new statute requires that its Governing Board shall report the non-compliance to all members and to the Security Council and General Assembly of the United Nations.

A Nobel Peace Prize to an organization that refuses to obey its most fundamental rule, turning its back on its very raison d'etre, and a Director-General that is orchestrating the retreat.

An infamous day in UN history, unless maybe you're a fan of Neville Chamberlain.
