Human Rights Expert Pledges Support for Reconciliation in Darfur

UN Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Sudan, Mashood Baderin, vowed to support Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) in its efforts to achieve reconciliation in the western Sudan region.
The expert started Sunday a 7-day visit to Khartoum and Darfur region where he is expected to meet national and regional officials and civil society groups as well as foreign diplomats and UN representatives.
On Sunday he met with the Sudanese justice minister Mohamed Bushara Dousa and the Commissioner for the Darfur Regional Authority's Office of justice, truth and reconciliation, Hameed Ahmed Amin.
Upon meeting at the Ministry of Justice on Sunday with Amin, the UN independent expert Baderin pledged to provide support and assistance to the Darfur Regional Authority's Office of Justice, Truth and Reconciliation.
He also promised to help building the capacity of the national civil society organizations working in the field of human rights through expertise transfer in addressing human rights under transitional justice along with discussing the obstacles facing training in general.
Baderin further briefed Dosa, about the program prepared for the Sudan in his current tenure in accordance with the decision issued by the Human Rights Council, that stipulates the provision of technical assistance to Sudan in developing the human rights field according to item 10.
Dosa affirmed the considerable progress Sudan had made in implementing the recommendations of UPR, through the mechanisms and the means available to the country represented in the advisory council, the national committee and national human rights organizations in Sudan.
The minister asserted Sudan's preparedness to cooperate with all the international human rights mechanisms, the African Union and the Sudanese non-governmental organizations, hoping the expert would clearly sustain the provision of the technical support and capacity building as identified by the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The Minister of Justice, on the other hand, asked the independent expert to clarify the obligations he's met over the past two years of his tenure; especially since Sudan had fulfilled all its obligations in promotion of human rights through national mechanisms.
