Statement under agenda Item 7 – 23 September 2016

Thank you Mr. President,

Since its birth, Israel has engaged in a policy of forcible displacement of Palestinians from their homes and lands. More than 750,000 Palestinians were displaced, some of them internally, during the “Nakba”, the tragedy in 1948 by which the majority of Palestinians were forcibly uprooted and expelled from their homes and lands in Mandate Palestine, or fled in fear for their lives after the brutal massacres perpetrated by Israeli militias and forces against thousands of Palestinians in a clear act of ethnic cleansing. 

Sixty-nine years on, the Palestine Question is still on the United Nations agenda, and no effective action has been taken to bring Israel in line with its international obligations. 

While Israel is the only country to have boycotted the Human Rights Council, to have blatantly ignored all UN resolutions since its birth.

Double standards are putting the credibility of the UN human rights system at stake, and embolden Israel to continue its violations, thus undermining the efforts for the realization of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. We urge all member states to participate actively in item 7.

As long as Israel is allowed to continue its exceptional and illegal behavior towards the people of Palestine, violating their rights with complete impunity, it is they, not Israel that are being singled out.

We condemn in the strongest terms the apartheid policies that Israel operates in the occupied territories in terms of racially segregated roads and a discriminatory permit regime, the imposition of a dual legal system in the Occupied State of Palestine, and the fragmentation of the territory and enclosure of Palestinians into Bantustan-like areas.
