Guided by the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenants on Human Rights, PP2. Reaffirming that all Member States have an obligation to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms as stated in the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenants on Human Rights and other applicable human rights instruments, * Non-member States of the Human Rights Council. PP3. Recalling General Assembly resolution 60/251 of 15 March 2006, PP4. Recalling also the resolutions 5/1 “Institution-building of the United Nations Human Rights Council” and 5/2 “Code of Conduct for Special Procedures mandate-holders of the Human Rights Council” of 18 June 2007 and stressing that the mandate-holder shall discharge his/her duties in accordance with these resolutions and their annexes, PP5. Having conducted an assessment of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur in the form of an interactive dialogue during its present session, in accordance with its resolution 5/1 of 18 June 2007, PP6. Reaffirming Commission on Human Rights resolution 2005/82 of 21 April 2005, PP7. Bearing in mind the report A/62/354 on the situation of human rights in all regions of Sudan presented by the Special Rapporteur and urging the implementation of the recommendations therein, PP8. Welcoming the report A/HRC/6/19 presented by the Human Rights Council Group of Experts on the Situation of Human Rights in Darfur and urging the implementation of the recommendations therein, PP9. Deeply concerned at the situation of human rights throughout Sudan, notably, at the slow pace of implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement as well as the gross violations of human rights that continue to be perpetrated in the Darfur region, PP10. Acknowledging the constructive cooperation of the Government of Sudan with the Council and its mechanisms, 1. Decides to extend for one year the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Sudan and requests the Special Rapporteur to: (a) monitor the situation of human rights in Sudan, (b) foster the effectiveness of international technical and financial support to Sudan in the field of human rights, and (c) submit to the Council a full annual report before the end of 2008, as well as all outstanding reports, in accordance with its annual programme of work; 1 alt Decides to defer the decision pertaining to the review , rationalization and improvement of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in the Sudan to the 8th session of the Council in June 2008. 1 bis Requests the Special Rapporteur to engage in an open and constructive dialogue with the Government of Sudan in fulfilling her mandate and to cooperate with OHCHR and the relevant UN human rights mechanisms taking into account the relevant resolutions and reports including inter alia report A/HRC/6/19. 2. Urges the Government of Sudan to continue cooperating fully with the Special Rapporteur and to respond favourably to her requests to visit Sudan and to provide her with all necessary information so as to enable her to fulfil her mandate even more effectively; 3. Calls upon the Secretary-General to provide the Special Rapporteur with all necessary assistance to enable her to discharge her mandate fully; 4. Invites relevant UN bodies and agencies, including the OHCHR, to continue providing support and technical assistance to Sudan in the field of human rights and calls upon donours to also continue providing financial and technical assistance for the improvement of the human rights situation in Sudan. ----- A/HRC/6/L.48 Page 2 A/HRC/6/L.48 Page 3
