Identical letters dated 4 April 2008 from the Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council
Upon instructions from my Government and with regard to certain baseless allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran reflected in the latest report of the Secretary-General on the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) (S/2008/135), I wish to state that, as I have brought to your attention in my previous letters, particularly my letter dated 9 November 2007 (S/2007/662) -- to which, regrettably no reference has been made in the recent report of the Secretary-General on resolution 1701 (2006) -- the Islamic Republic of Iran rejects the said allegations concerning the so-called "claimed transfer of sophisticated weaponry" to Lebanon. The said allegations, which are based on totally false and misleading information provided by the Israeli regime, are aimed by the said regime to distract the international community's attention from the atrocities it has committed, and continues to perpetrate, against the peoples in the region, particularly against the Palestinian and Lebanese people. Unquestionably, the Israeli regime, with its long record of ill-intended misinformation campaigns, and as a regime that according to numerous United Nations reports, including the Secretary-General's reports on resolution 1701 (2006), has violated various provisions of resolution 1701 (2006) and many other United Nations resolutions, has no legitimacy or credibility to level such groundless allegations against others. Given the fact that the Secretary-General's reports should be impartial, factual and based on concrete evidence, it is our legitimate expectation and firm belief that the Secretary-General should exercise utmost vigilance over the contents of such reports in order to prevent them from being turned into a platform for false, misleading and unfounded allegations manufactured by notorious and unreliable sources, such as the Israeli regime, against others.
