Letter dated 2 May 2008 from the Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council Upon instructions from my Government and with reference to the latest report of the Secretary-General on Security Council resolution 1559 (2004) (S/2008/264), in which certain unwarranted references are made to, and some baseless allegations are raised against, the Islamic Republic of Iran, I wish to bring the following to your attention. The Islamic Republic of Iran enjoys deep historical and brotherly relations with Lebanon and has always supported national unity, national dialogue and consensus among Lebanese groups as the solution to the current political situation in the country. The Islamic Republic of Iran has also made sincere efforts to help bring the views of different Lebanese political groups and figures closer together. It is regrettable that the report has, in a selective manner, referred to certain parts of a particular statement (S/2008/264, para. 53) to project an untrue picture of the approach of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards the political situation in Lebanon. It is equally unfortunate that the report is silent on the very unambiguous statements by some Lebanese officials that clearly refer to the interference in Lebanese internal affairs by certain powers, particularly the United States of America. Undoubtedly, this selective approach in a report that carries the name of the United Nations is unjustifiable and runs counter to the principle of impartiality, on the basis of which the United Nations is bound to operate. The Islamic Republic of Iran has always rejected any foreign interference in Lebanon, and, by the same token, any reference in the report with regard to its approach towards Lebanon that may imply anything contrary to this principled position of my Government is unfounded and void of any value. I should be grateful if you could bring the present letter to the attention of the members of the Security Council and to circulate it as a document of the Council.
