Pakistan calls for strengthening UN General Assembly's role UNITED NATIONS, Nov 21 (APP) Pakistan Friday called for enhancing the role, authority, effectiveness and efficiency of the UN General Assembly so as to enable the 192 member body to effectively deal with international problems. Speaking in a debate on measures to strengthen the role of the assembly, Amjad Hussain Sial, the Pakistan deputy permanent representative, proposed a thorough evaluation of the implementation status of the assembly resolutions and identification of the underlying causes for their lack of implementation as a step towards revitalizing the assembly. Noting that rationalizing the Assembly's agenda was essentially a political exercise, he said the agenda must be maintained, and remain open to the insertion of new issues in consultation with States. Criteria used to guide those decisions would need to equitably apply to all. In that context, Ambassador Sial emphasized that the "sunset" clause should be carefully examined. ("Sunset" clause is a provision in a resolution that terminates or repeals all or portions of the document after a specific date.) The Pakistan delegate said that States should be mindful of the Assembly's role in the selection and appointment of the Secretary General and discussions should aim to achieve consensus, not open ended deliberations. Further, the AdHoc Working Group on the revitalization of the General Assembly should focus on strengthening the Office of the Assembly President to enable him to take on a more effective leadership role.
