Box 14789 Dare es Salaam - Tanzania 19 December 2011 Dear Ambassador Lassere, Re: Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Sudan You may recall that the Human Rights Council, at its Eighteenth session on 14 October 2011, in Resolution 18/16 (Technical assistance for the Sudan in the field of human rights), renewed my mandate for a period of one year under Item 10 (Technical assistance and capacity building). Specifically, it tasked me to engage with the Government of the Sudan with a view to identifying areas of assistance that will aid it to fulfill its human rights obligations. Pursuant to this mandate, I will be undertaking a mission to the Sudan in January 2012. Considering the best interest of the mandate under the renewed terms, I hereby resign as Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Sudan. To ensure a smooth transition, this is to be effective on the date of appointment by the Council of my successor or on any other date you deem most appropriate. Once again, I wish to thank the Council and the Government of the Sudan for their full cooperation during my tenure of office.
