Sixty-first session Agenda item 104 Appointment of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Letter dated 5 October 2006 from the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations addressed to the President of the General Assembly I write with reference to my letter of 3 July 2006, in which I had the honour to inform Jan Eliasson, President of the sixtieth session of the General Assembly, of the Government of India’s decision to nominate Shashi Tharoor as its candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations (A/61/128). India has consistently held the view that the next Secretary-General should be an Asian candidate, with the widest possible acceptability. In view of this, and to help generate a consensus on the selection of an Asian as Secretary-General, I now have the honour to inform you that the Government of India has decided to withdraw the candidature of Mr. Tharoor. I would be grateful if the present letter were circulated as a document of the General Assembly.
