General Assembly Sixty-first session Agenda items 13 and 14 The situation in the Middle East Question of Palestine Security Council Sixty-first year Identical letters dated 18 December 2006 from the Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council I write to inform you of the number of Palestinian terror attacks carried out against Israel over the past week, in violation of the ceasefire that is in place. From Sunday morning, 10 December 2006, until this morning, 18 December 2006, 11 Qassam rockets were launched by Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip at Israeli communities in the south. Of those rockets, two landed in the town of Sderot. Buildings in the area were damaged by the falling rockets. Palestinian terrorists are continuing their relentless campaign of Qassam rocket attacks in spite of the ceasefire agreed upon by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas nearly three weeks ago. Israel is exercising restraint in responding to these ceasefire violations, knowing that the terrorists are using the opportunity to rearm and plan future attacks. Continued Palestinian terror, in particular the violation of the ceasefire principles, gravely threatens the prospects for peace and security in our region. I would be grateful if you would arrange to have the text of the present letter circulated as a document of the sixty-first session of the General Assembly under agenda items 13 and 14, and of the Security Council.
