Letter dated 21 November 2006 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council I have the honour to refer to your statement of today issued on behalf of the Security Council, in which the Council unequivocally condemned the assassination in Beirut on 21 November 2006 of Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel (S/PRST/2006/46). The Council also welcomed the determination and commitment of the Government of Lebanon to bring to justice the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this and other assassinations and underlined the determination to support the Government of Lebanon in its efforts to this end. In this connection, I have received today a letter from the Prime Minister of Lebanon, His Excellency Mr. Fouad Siniora, in which he requested technical assistance for the Government of Lebanon’s efforts to investigate the murder of Mr. Gemayel. The Government also requested that the International Independent Investigation Commission (IIIC) be in touch with the relevant Lebanese authorities for that purpose. Since IIIC reports to the Security Council, I am transmitting this request to you, and through you to the other members of the Security Council, in order for members to take appropriate action.
