Sixtieth session Agenda item 112 (e) Elections to fill vacancies in subsidiary organs and other elections: election of 47 members of the Human Rights Council Note verbale dated 5 April 2006 from the Permanent Mission of Morocco to the United Nations addressed to the Secretariat The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations presents its compliments to the Secretariat of the United Nations and has the honour to inform the Secretariat that the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco has decided to present its candidature to the United Nations Human Rights Council during the elections that will be held on 9 May 2006. The Kingdom of Morocco, which believes that the United Nations has a vital role in the promotion and protection of human rights, has always been committed to the aims and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and the norms and standards emanating from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments. In this regard, Morocco has contributed significantly to the elaboration of all core human rights instruments, as well as to the work of the Commission on Human Rights and human rights treaty bodies. Furthermore, the Kingdom of Morocco, whose respect of international commitments is a constitutional principle, is actively and deeply committed to the promotion and respect of the universality of human rights. Morocco actively undertakes to bring its national legislation into conformity with international standards, adheres to almost all major United Nations human rights instruments and has consistently observed its reporting obligations. In addition to outstanding accomplishments made in the fields of civil, political, economic and cultural rights (Family Code, Ombudsman, Law against Torture, etc.), the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco decided upon the publication of the final report of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (ERC) and the implementation of its recommendations, and also launched the National Initiative for Human Development, which represents an integrated plan aimed at reducing social disparities and achieving sustained and harmonious social and economic development.
