Remarks by Ambassador John R. Bolton, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, on Sudan, at the Security Council stakeout, August 31, 2006 
Ambassador Bolton: Okay, I just have a minute because we have to go in for the vote but we’re going to have the vote on our Sudan resolution, co-sponsored with the United kingdom and now five other countries. We certainly hope we’ll have a unanimous Council but in any event we think we have gone the extra mile to try and accommodate the concerns of the government of Sudan and its supporters on the Council. And while we would certainly prefer unanimity, we think it’s important to move quickly to get this resolution adopted and to move forward with the transition of the force now in Darfur to U.N. command. I’ll have a statement that I’ll release later and I’ll just take one or two questions because there really isn’t much time.

Reporter: The Chinese ambassador said he couldn’t support it. Does that weaken in any way – in your mind - the strength of this resolution?

Ambassador Bolton: Absolutely not. While it’s – as I say – preferable to have unanimity, we’re not going to sacrifice the need to take a stronger hand to try and stop the genocide in Sudan just because we can’t get unanimity. And China will be the one that has to explain why it’s not voting in favor of this resolution. Okay, see y’all later.
